Tell me more about supported employment

Supported employment matches the skills and talents of a jobseeker with the identified need of an organisation. Through supported employment, you can hire a person for a specific role and specific hours.

How does my organisation benefit from employing a person with an intellectual disability and/or autism?

  • You will demonstrate your commitment to inclusion and diversity to your customers and your staff team. This is proven to boost staff morale and customer loyalty.
  • You will be able to design a role that will best suit your organisation and its needs.
  • You and your staff team will be supported by the Wark4Life Employment Facilitators who have the skills and experience to identify a role for a person in your organisation and who will find the best candidate for that role. We also provide ongoing support to both the employee and the employer to ensure the employment is sustainable and beneficial for all.
  • You may be entitled to financial incentives and supports from the government.
  • Your staff and managers will enhance their mentoring and communication skills.
  • People with disabilities and/or autism are proven to be diligent, motivated employees.

Supported Employment – How does it Work?

  1. Initial meeting between Employment Facilitator and Employer to carve out meaningful role of benefit to the employer.
  2. Employment Facilitator will match a jobseeker to the role based on their identified interests, skills and talents.
  3. A 6-8 week work placement of 2 hours per week is arranged to give the jobseeker the opportunity to explore the role and the environment. The work placement is supported by a Job Coach with regular communication with the employer.
  4. At the end of the work placement, the Job Coach will meet with the Employer to complete a work placement review. An offer of paid employment may be made to a candidate but if now, the employer will be asked if they would offer a work placement to another jobseeker again.
  5. Should paid employment be offered, the Job Coach will support the new employee and the employer to formalise the employment e.g. relevant form completion.
  6. The Job Coach will continue to support the person in their workplace to learn and hone their tasks, create positive working relationships with their colleagues and feel confident in their role. Support can be reduced or removed but this is only following discussion with the employer and the employee.
  7. If a person is unsupported in their role, a Job Coach will meet the employer at regular intervals to complete employment reviews. The frequency of these is decided by the employer.
  8. Work4Life has a dedicated employment support team – who are available at 087-6353895 should you need to contact them for any reason.

I am not in a position to offer a paid job right now, is there another way I can get involved?

Absolutely! At Work4Life, we are supporting people who are just beginning their journey towards paid employment. We are always looking for opportunities for job tasters and work experience placements to give jobseekers the chance to identify what type of work suits them best and to hone their skills in this area .

Words from our employers

Tommy joins us every Tuesday in Ballyfoyle with the help from SOS Kilkenny where he has become an integral part of our fabrication crew. He arrives with a smile and leaves with an even bigger smile. Tommy undertakes his roll with great commitment, enthusiasm and responsibility leaving nothing to chance. He questions and listens, giving great comfort to his co-workers of whom all have grown to trust and rely on Tommy’s new learnt skills and abilities. Our Tuesdays would not be the same without Tommy as he has become a huge part of our work life here in Ballyfoyle. Having Tommy join our workforce has been a great decision and one I would suggest and recommend to all. We all really look forward to Tommy’s Tuesdays now. Martin Stapleton CDS Metalwork
Customers and crew love having Adam and Conor on board our team. They take pride in their jobs and love it here. They feel a sense of belonging and purpose and we have seen them grow in confidence since starting here. It also gives us a sense of pride seeing their development and knowing they are learning skills they can use in other aspects of their lives also. McDonalds
We have been working with SOS Kilkenny and James for 2 years now and during that time I have found SOS Kilkenny to be a fantastic organisation to work with and James has become valued member of the team here in TJ Reid Health & Fitness. We look forward to seeing him come through the doors each Thursday and he has built up a fantastic relationship with our members and clients over the last few years. We will continue our partnership with SOS Kilkenny long into the future and we look forward to working with James each and every week. Daniel McDaid, General Manager TJ Reid Health & Fitness
... is dedicated and diligent in his work, conscientious and thorough in his attitude and he delivers brilliant results for the team. We have developed an excellent relationship and our team has gained invaluable experience in communicating more effectively, coaching and mentoring and enhancing our people management skills. (He) has a great ability to lift our mood and give us a boost when we need it - a skill which is extremely valued - and we are privileged to have him on our team Bank of Ireland
Having Pat join our team here at Market Cross Shopping centre has been a pure joy. He is meticulous at his job which is a very important one as most of the files here are confidential and Pat ensures we are complying to our GDPR mandatory via shredding. But, on a more personal level – the whole team rally to support Pat by fetching small things that enable him to carry out his duties – it's very warming to see this and also Pat feels comfortable with the team too. Mondays are brighter with Pat part of our team and we look forward to developing with him. Lesley Cleere, Manager Market Cross Shopping Centre
